Notch Černé Pivo Launch – December 8
Spoiler alert: the internet does not agree with itself when you try to find the exact definition for session beers. Is it below 4% or 5%?No one knows. It does, however, bring up about a million craft beer folks fighting about it and voicing their opinions, which we won’t be sharing here. Today, we’re not debating, we’re celebrating a trend in beer that we’re really enjoying and luckily for us Boston folks, we’ve got a local session beer brewed right down the road.
Notch Session is brewed in Ipswich, MA by Chris Lohring, a believer in session brews. Session beers are exactly what the title says – meant to be enjoyed over a long period of time. Bonus points for being able to stand up afterwards because of the low ABV. From the girl who really doesn’t know a lot about beer itself /brewing/what hop tastes like what (hey, I’m learning), I have to say these beers are really incredible. Immediately you’ll assume that a lower ABV has no flavor and “there’s no point”. (Stop judging beers based on the Bud Light in your hand, folks.) There’s about 4 bottles of the Notch Saison in my fridge right now and it has become one of my go-to brews for after work. (The BSA Harvest also got me through a long day of cooking Thanksgiving dinner.) These beers are full of flavor and worth a try. You’ll start stocking your fridge too, I promise.
Back to the point of this post! December 8th at The Salty Pig in the Back Bay, Notch will be launching their new brew - Černé Pivo. Some info from the Facebook invite about the beer - Inspired by the dark session lagers of the Czech Republic, Notch Černé Pivo is malty, toasty, infinitely drinkable, and somewhat hard to pronounce (CHAIR-nay). Černé Pivo is Czech for “Black Beer” and is a beer style wholly unique to the Czech Republic. I tried to pronounce it three times today while explaining it to someone. I’m pretty close to having a screen shot of the label to hold up during my next conversation about this beer.
We may also be bias because we have helped/cheered as a cask or two of other Notch brews were tapped. Good work, Kristen!
We’ll be at The Salty Pig on December 8th. Stop by, eat some stinky cheese and have a brew with us.

Jealous because I have yet to go to Salty Pig. One day. Oh, and I just tried Černé Pivo at The Other Side a day or so ago: de-freaking-licious! Black beers, as I’ve experienced, can have all the flavour of a stout without being as heavy… which means you can drink more than two.
I think I’d include Sam Adams Black Lager in the same loose category. Cheers!
